MBS Program FAQs
How are non-traditional students considered for admissions?
CUSM welcomes applications from students from diverse backgrounds. Please use your resume/CV and personal statement to tell us how your unique background has prepared you to succeed in the MBS Program.
What are your admission deadlines to apply?
Our admissions cycle opens at the beginning of February each year. Applications are accepted through June. Applications are reviewed in the order received. CUSM operates a rolling admissions process. Early submission is recommended.
What is the matriculation rate of students who apply to MD school?

Is research experience more 'important' than optional test scores when reviewing applications?
Admissions review is a holistic process; all aspects of applications are considered.
Are MCAT/GRE test scores required?
Test scores are not required. If you have taken the MCAT or another standardized test and submitted your score, this will be included in the application review.
How does a low GPA affect my application?
Our preferred GPA for applicants is 3.0 and above, with a minimum GPA for application of 2.8. The average GPA for our incoming classes to date has been in the range of 3.2 - 3.3. If your GPA is lower, grades are considered as you progress through your undergraduate degree, notably stronger performance in upper-level biomedical science courses. Overall GPA is based only on undergraduate degree coursework. Post-bac grades are not considered.
What makes a strong candidate?
A strong application demonstrates the candidate's motivation for the MBS Program and their subsequent career pathway. The personal statement should be specific to the CUSM MBS program. Submitting a general application statement is not recommended.
Suggestions for a strong application:
- Well-organized resume clearly describing qualifications and experiences.
- Extra-curricular activities include period and specific participation information, i.e., leadership role.
- Clearly describe information related to academics, research experience, and volunteer and community involvement
- Personal hardships that may have impacted your academic career and information about your ability and motivation to succeed in the MBS academic program can be described.
How are applicants notified of their application status?
Applicants will be notified of their status by email.
Is the MBS program on a rolling admissions cycle?
Yes, applications are reviewed in the order received. The application window opens in February each year.
Do you accept International Students?
CUSM does not accept international students.
What is your GPA requirement?
An undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 and above is preferred, with a minimum GPA of 2.8.
I noticed that a 3.0 grade point average is preferred, but I wanted to know if you have students who do not meet this standard.
A minimum GPA of 2.8 will be considered for review for acceptance into the MBS program.
Do you have a preference as to whom my letters of recommendation come from?
Typically, recommendation letters are written by individuals with first-hand knowledge of academic work, professional activities, and/or the candidate's role in volunteering/community support work. Letters of recommendation are most frequently undersigned by faculty members, medical professionals, and community organization leaders.
Does CUSM have affiliations with any medical schools or hospitals?
CUSM's primary teaching hospital is Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, which is adjacent to the campus. In-hospital experience is limited to MD students. CUSM faculty can provide suggestions to MBS students who wish to begin or augment their clinical experience.
